VINCI Airports achieves “Most Sustainable Airport in Brazil” for Salvador Bahia Airport for the third year in a row
By obtaining the highest scores in sustainability related matters, Salvador Bahia Airport, member of the VINCI Airports network, has been awarded for third year in a row as the most sustainable in Brazil. The recognition is granted by National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) annually as part of its Sustainable Airport Program.
The facility achieved the top of the podium in the overall ranking by scoring 97,04% by fulfilling all of the criteria established by the Agency. Salvador Bahia Airport reached its highest performance in aircraft noise, climate change, waste and electrical energy managements. Overall, ANAC evaluated 32 criteria related to environment management in 20 Brazilian airports.
Salvador Bahia Airport started its path to become the most sustainable terminal in Brazil in 2018, when VINCI Airports' environmental strategy was introduced, with the goal to halve carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The airport was the first in Brazil to install a local solar plant, to halt sending solid waste to landfills and to reuse wastewater. It also received the “Green Airport” seal from the International Airport Council - Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC).
Salvador Bahia Airport features as well a wildlife management program and a system that allows capturing water from the air conditioning network to reuse it. Former equipment have been replaced by eco-efficient ones, conventional lighting by LED and a monitoring process to measure the amount of water and energy used by sub-concessionaires has been implemented.
The Technical Director of Salvador Bahia Airport, Yann Le Bihan, comments, “This award is the result of a global environmental action plan by VINCI Airports. To bring solutions to our clients and stakeholders beyond our perimeter, and to lead the eco transformation the industry is going through, by promoting our positive mobility motto”.
Located in the capital of Bahia state, Salvador Bahia Airport is the first Concession of the VINCI Airports network in Brazil, which took over operation on January 2nd, 2018. Since then, Salvador Airport has incorporated global operational standards, seeking to offer more efficiency, safety, and a better travel experience for its passengers. With this goal in mind, modernization and expansion works have been implemented at the terminal, an investment of R$700 million – around US$120 – that increased its capacity by 50%, now serving up to 15 million passengers per year. Considered the “Most Sustainable Airport in Brazil”, Salvador Bahia Airport stands out for its pioneering actions in environmental preservation.
